Sturgeon Electric crews are building a general purpose, single-level submarine berthing platform extension to an existing service pier at Naval Base Kitsap in Bangor. The project also calls for reconfiguring and expanding the existing wave screen attenuation system and modifying the small craft berth.
Construction of the 520-foot-by-68-foot reinforced concrete structure encompasses pier-side utilities, communication systems, and two 580-square foot concrete “floating camels,” bumpers that protect submarine hulls from damage while berthed to concrete and steel piers.
The pier extension also covers the construction of engineered piles and caps to support the pier deck, a fixed crane, equipment pads, mobile cranes, and utility buildings.
Additionally, a low-rise building will be built on the pier to accommodate new tool air compressors and breathing air compressors and an existing building will be altered an existing building to handle new and existing lift stations, sewage equipment, storm drainage, wastewater services, and a new emergency generator.
