Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel (EJMT) ITS Upgrade Transportation

Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel (EJMT) ITS Upgrade

Client Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT)
Completion Date Summer 2024
Location Georgetown, Colorado

This project involved the upgrade of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), including overhead Variable Message Signs (VMS) and Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) from mile point 213.11 to mile point 216.18. These tools are used for monitoring traffic flow and incidents, displaying information for travelers, and making the tunnel as efficient and safe as possible. Sturgeon Electric’s scope of work on the project involved installing 22 VMS and associated control cabinets, replacement of all cameras, ethernet, cabling, and associated equipment, as well as the installation of Lane Use Signs (LUS) that indicate open and closed lanes to the travelling public. As a result of the upgraded technology system, the EJMT can now be monitored and controlled from state-of-the-art control rooms on both the east and west ends of the tunnel as well as from the main command center in Golden, Colo.

This project was one of seven total tunnel improvement projects, and Sturgeon Electric led the traffic control management for all projects, coordinating closely with CDOT and other contractors on the job site throughout the project lifecycle. The project began in July 2023 and was completed on time and on budget in the summer of 2024, providing Colorado travelers with a more efficient and effective experience through the EJMT.

In total, Sturgeon Electric and its subcontractors worked more than 27,759 hours on the project with no major quality setbacks or required rework while maintaining safety excellence, including zero recordable or lost time incidents.
