Sturgeon Electric built a 30-mile 230kV line from McNary Substation near Umatilla, Oregon, to Wallula Substation near Walulla, Washington, installing 26 steel pole structures and 180 wood H-frame structures in terrain that was difficult to access and drill.
Crews installed half-inch optical ground wire and three-eighths-inch steel in the shield wire position, with sections of ADSS fiber used under crossings, and a new 1158.4 ACSS Hudson conductor.
Because the transmission line crosses the state line and traverses tribal lands, extensive coordination between landowners and other entities was required throughout the project’s duration.
