Location: Colorado’s US 36 between Denver and Boulder
Description: In June 2016, crews completed construction on Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) $497M US-HWY 36 Managed Lanes Project, which creates new Express Lanes, as well as the US 36 Bikeway and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service from Denver to Boulder.
US-HWY 36 between Denver and Boulder first opened as a four-lane toll road in 1951 with only one interchange. Rapid population growth along the Us 36 corridor prompted nine additional interchanges, yet the number of main through-lanes remained at four – until completion of the US-HWY 36 Managed Lanes Project in 2016.
New Express Lanes have been constructed in each direction for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), high-occupancy vehicles (HOV), and tolled single-occupancy vehicles (SOV), greatly alleviating congestion and providing travelers with additional choices.
